In the visual arts, the term mixed media stands for the use of different media or techniques in the creation of a work.
An example of mixed media is the integration of drawing elements in a painting on the same painting surface: this is then neither a collage nor multimedia. The term multimedia is used for a corresponding procedure outside the arts.
Especially with gluing techniques, it is important to let the individual layers dry well in each case and to apply oil paint – if used – last. When using many or heavy materials, the painting surface should be particularly firm, wood is often used. About my work
My painting arises from an interplay of construction and removal. Acrylic, pigments, collage fragments: layers are applied, pushed, removed. What remains are traces and breaks that ignite the images.
Figures emerge—often masked, sometimes only as gestures—and move between intimacy and abstraction. I am interested in how identity is formed from layers: from roles, protection, memory. That is why I work visibly: edges, overpainting, and the removal of paint are part of the image’s memory.
My background in engineering shapes my precision, not my vocabulary. I seek precise blurring: places where something is both solid and fragile at the same time.
In this way, the works become spaces for conversation. They do not explain anything, but open up possibilities: those who look compose along with them—with their own gaze, their own biography.
Biography
Annette Kunow (born 1953, Berlin) is a painter living in Bochum. After receiving her degree (civil engineering, 1976) and doctorate (mechanical engineering, 1981), she became a professor in 1988; she continued her artistic education with Elvira Bach, Franz Hitzler, Nancy Spero, Leon Golub, and others. Her painting combines layering, collage, and overpainting—figures between mask, proximity, and abstraction.

Der Begriff Mixed Media steht in der bildenden Kunst für die Verwendung unterschiedlicher Medien oder Techniken bei der Erstellung eines Werkes.
Ein Beispiel für Mixed Media ist die Integration zeichnerischer Elemente in einem Gemälde auf demselben Malgrund: Das ist dann weder eine Collage noch Multimedia. Der Begriff Multimedia wird für ein entsprechendes Vorgehen außerhalb der Künste verwendet.
Speziell bei Klebetechniken ist es wichtig, die einzelnen Schichten jeweils gut trocknen zu lassen und Ölfarbe – sofern verwendet – zuletzt aufzutragen. Bei der Nutzung vieler oder schwerer Materialien sollte der Malgrund besonders fest sein, Holz kommt dabei oft zum Einsatz. Jede Maltechnik hat ihren eignen Charakter und wirkt unterschiedlich.
Stifte lassen präzise Striche zu, mit dem Pinsel wird gleichmäßig gearbeitet.
Die Kombination unterschiedlicher Mal- und Zeichentechniken wird als Mischtechnik bezeichnet.
Hier können alle Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten zum Tragen können und im Werk wirken.
Die Mischtechniken ermöglichen mir, meine täglichen Eindrücke festzuhalten.
Oft sind sie expressiv und direkt. Hier verarbeite ich alle Farben und alle Materialien.

Über meine Arbeiten
Meine Malerei entsteht aus einem Wechselspiel von Aufbau und Rücknahme. Acryl, Pigmente, Collagefragmente: Schichten werden gesetzt, geschoben, abgetragen. Was bleibt, sind Spuren und Brüche, an denen sich die Bilder entzünden.
Figuren tauchen auf – oft maskiert, manchmal nur als Geste – und bewegen sich zwischen Intimität und Abstraktion. Mich beschäftigt, wie sich Identität aus Layern bildet: aus Rollen, Schutz, Erinnerung. Darum arbeite ich sichtbar: Kanten, Übermalungen und das Herauslösen von Farbe gehören zum Bildgedächtnis.
Die Herkunft aus dem Ingenieurwesen prägt meine Genauigkeit, nicht mein Vokabular. Ich suche präzise Unschärfen: Orte, an denen etwas gleichzeitig fest und fragil ist.
So werden die Arbeiten zu Gesprächsräumen. Sie erklären nichts, sondern eröffnen Möglichkeiten: Wer schaut, komponiert mit – mit eigenem Blick, eigener Biografie.
